Kazakhstan National Bank has introduced a new ban prohibiting Kazakh banks from keeping over 30% of their funds abroad, but offered them tenge rate stability and cheap funding at the same time. Central bank Governor Kairat Kelimbetov announced the new ban prohibiting Kazakh banks from transferring abroad the funds they raise from the domestic market at the press-conference on September 5. Photograph: Getty Images On Wednesday, the players of FC Astana will board a plane in Lisbon and fly east for 3830 miles to get home. To put that in context, that’s 400 miles further than flying from London to New York. If they drove (non-stop), the journey would take them 77 hours and take them through nine countries and five time zones. It is, in short, a long way. But those players will make the journey having made history…

Kazakhstan’s president criticized the performance of the central bank as he replaced Governor Kairat Kelimbetov, who devalued the national currency twice in his two-year tenure amid plummeting oil prices and a rout in emerging markets. President Nursultan Nazarbayev named Daniyar Akishev, 39, an aide in his administration and former deputy governor at the central bank, to succeed Kelimbetov, according to a decree posted on his website Monday. The tenge weakened 0.4 percent to 281.26 versus the dollar as of 4:39 p.m. in Almaty, extending last month’s…

THE world suffers no shortage of uranium, the raw material for nuclear energy and nuclear weapons. The amount of electricity generated globally by nuclear power peaked almost a decade ago. And no reactors have ever been shut down because of a lack of fuel. Yet Warren Buffett has put the first $50m behind a $150m project agreed on August 27th to build a uranium bank in Kazakhstan, the world’s biggest producer of the mineral. It sounds like something a Bond villain might dream up, rather than a philanthropic American billionaire. What is the logic?…

Kazakhstan is a country rich in fuels of all sorts. It is a major supplier of oil and uranium, and is now working toward cleaner, renewable energies like solar and wind power. It is also a major source of a fuel that some see as a cleaner link between traditional, polluting fuels and the renewable future: natural gas. With oil and nuclear energy dominating the conversation about Kazakhstan and with President Nursultan Nazarbayev announcing plans to build a nuclear power plant in the country in his Jan. 17 state-of-the-nation address, its natural…

Analysts raise questions about the reasons for Kazakhstan’s national wealth fund’s sale of a 10 percent stake in the state energy company to the National Bank, wondering if the bank was pressured to accept the deal and how well Kazakhstan is coping with a slowdown in economic growth. Although Kazakhstan experienced significant net emigration throughout the 1990s, it has now become a republic of immigration in the space of a few years. Large numbers of migrants from the other Central Asian countries are drawn to Kazakhstan because it is easier to move there than to Russia; xenophobia is much less rife; and the rhythm of economic development makes it very attractive in salary terms. According to official estimates, about 500, migrants from other Central Asian Republics work in Kazakhstan. At the CIS summit in October 2007, the…
